What are limiting beliefs?

Limiting beliefs are repetitive negative thoughts that have been created through the mind’s interpretation and reasoning about the past negative experiences we have encountered.

So, if you have something in your life that isn’t working, or you are simply not achieving it is most likely because you have a limiting belief about it that is keeping you stuck.

It is your minds job to keep you safe. So, the beliefs that are holding you back and keeping you stuck are protecting you from future hurt or negativity.

However, when you listen to, or think those limiting beliefs They either prevent you from trying, and you just accept you can’t do it, or you try and then you self-sabotage or end up stuck in procrastination.

But here’s the thing, you can overcome this. You just need to reprogram your mind to change your beliefs.

A simple self-coaching exercise to uncover limiting beliefs

Try this simple self-coaching exercise to uncover your limiting beliefs.

Grab a pen and paper and answer these questions.

What is something you are doubting you can have or achieve?

Why do you think you can’t have this?

What stories, reasons or excuses are you telling yourself and others about this?

Start with “The reason why I don’t have what I want, or I haven’t achieved xxx yet is because….

Write it down. Take a good look at it.

The clues are there in your story.

What is an example of a limiting belief?

Examples of some limiting beliefs are.

I am too old.

I am too young.

There’s not enough money.

Money is the root of all evil.

All men are cheaters.

All the good ones are taken.

I am not healthy because I have bad genes.

I have no willpower.

There aren’t any decent jobs out there.

I am not qualified to do anything else.

The story you have been telling yourself makes you see the world through a particular lens. The lens that you have been looking through has created the results you see today.

How to change your limiting beliefs

Change your beliefs. Change your life.

Look at your answers to the questions above. See if you can identify the limiting beliefs you have, and then write them out.

Once you have your list of limiting beliefs write out an opposite belief to counteract it.

For example

“I will never be wealthy”. Flip it too “I can be as wealthy and abundant as I desire”.

It is now time to reprogram your mind with these new beliefs.

These new beliefs are now your positive affirmations.

Post them on your fridge, write them on your mirror, carry them round in your pocket and recite and repeat over and over again.

Try this for 21 days, because it is proven to take over 20 repetitions for something to become a habit or new belief.
