The most common cause of insomnia and night anxiety is the anxiety and stress we experience throughout the day. Therefore, it is important to try and relieve these symptoms during the day for us to get a better night’s sleep.
We experience anxiety when more of our thoughts are negative than positive. And anxiety always seems worse at night but why is that? Read on for tips on how to relieve insomnia and night anxiety.
What causes Anxiety?
Racing thoughts and negative imagining about what might happen in the future cause us to worry and this generates the feelings of anxiety.
We need to realise the story we have just told ourselves only might happen and it does not yet exist. And we must remember that we live out the story we continue to tell ourselves. So it is vital that we dispel negative imagining when it first appears.
Why is Anxiety worse at night?
It is the time of day when there are less distractions and you are left alone with your own thoughts. This can lead to overthinking and small problems are magnified way out of proportion.

So, you’re lying in bed at night you may have been to sleep already and just woken up or you may be lying there unable to drift off. Then one of those dreaded thoughts pops into your head and anxiety kicks in. what do you do to sooth yourself and calm those racing thoughts so that you can relax and drift back off to sleep? Mindfulness to Relieve Insomnia and Night Anxiety
Here is a useful mindfulness process when bad feelings and negative thoughts emerge.
Acknowledge: Acknowledge the thought and feeling and don’t attach a story or judgement to it.
Accept the feeling: Accept the feeling is there. Tell yourself it is ok to feel that feeling. Be aware that nothing is permanent and that we are all in a constant state of change and that what we perceive as reality is simply a state that will pass.
Let the feelings go: Decide to let go of the thought and the negative feeling in the body. And believe things will change for the better tomorrow.
Think of something positive: Tell yourself you are safe and warm and think of something nice, like lovely holiday you have taken or your child or pet. Or even imagine a magical experience.

Tapping is highly effective at reducing anxiety.

How to do it
Generally, you would use your three middle fingers to tap on all the points. The pressure should be quite light, and you can tap on either side of the body using either hand. or you can tap both sides at the same time.
